It’s July and I’m starting to fret about where we’ll spend Christmas…which then makes me think that I can’t believe I’m worrying about Christmas since it’s July …which then makes me think about how quickly time flies…which then makes me nervous because I think about all the things I thought I’d get done this year but haven’t even started.

1. Do the stuff the financial planner suggested I do in September.

 

2. Finish Owen’s D*&^M baby book.

4. Find all the kids school/sports pictures and put them in a binder of some sort.

 

5. Take vitamins. Daily, not monthly.

 

6. Pull all that crap out from under my bed.

 

That’s depressing…

 

But those weren’t my REAL New Year’s Resolutions. Those I made simple and do-able so I could feel like a winner. Note there are only three…Which are –

 

1. Drink more water. The trick has been finding the right vessel which was always my excuse for not drinking water. I hate cleaning those pesky Sigg things, feel guilty drinking out of throw-away water bottles, and a plain old glass from the cupboard is boring. Solution – I bought one of those plastic glasses with the straw from Starbucks. It’s magic – it meets all my criteria for a water container – easy to clean, doesn’t spill, no guilt. Or maybe I love it because it makes me feel like Nancy Botwin — but without the pot.

 

2. Picture of the Day. This has actually brought a lot of fun to my life this year. And, I’ve actually stuck with it. It keeps my eyes open.

 

3. Read more YA. I know…but I’ve read some great stuff this year. The Hunger Games, If I Stay, Where She Went, The Hate List, The Book Thief, Please Ignore Vera Dietz. And, a few others that I simply will not admit.

She was just as funny, insightful and honest as I'd hoped. I first fell in love with her when I read that she refuses to play the ''soul-sucking death torture'' game of Candy Land. Those words set me FREE. Two minutes after I read that, I packed up that game and threw it in the trash. Before I read those words I thought I was the only mother in the world who would rather poke her eyes out than play that crappy game. Thank you, Ayelet.

I had a BlackBerry…and all I did was complain about it…I wanted to be one of the cool kids — I wanted a GPS, instant Internet connection, the ability to check in on Facebook so all my friends know when I’m at Safeway.

 

The major upside of that jalopy was the Qwerty keyboard.  I could text and email as fast as an admin on crack.  Together, Qwerty and I rocked.  A match made in heaven.

 

But, we broke up…I thought I needed more.

 

I’ll admit it was love at first sight with my Windows 7 phone.  It’s FABULOUS – but – my new love has a TOUCH SCREEN. And touch screen and I just don’t sync.  I can.not.do.it.at.all!   I feel like Jack Bauer forced off the grid.  The touch screen is torture.  So bad that I actually had to make phone calls this week.  Did you read that? — PHONE CALLS.  I have dear friends who have never heard my voice on a phone.  We are text friends only.  Sometimes dozens of texts a day — with the unspoken rule of DON’T CALL ME. But, this week I had no choice…I had to call and the response on the other end of the phone was always the same, “OMG. You’re calling! Is this an emergency?”

 

My family, on the other hand, loves my new phone because they feel like it brought mommy home again. My youngest son doesn’t have to yell, “Can’t you see I’m getting kidnapped—Get off that phone!” in order to get my attention.  My oldest doesn’t have to plead, “Could you put that thing away and be PRESENT.” The kids actually did hit the jackpot because they got the outcome of an intervention without the hard work of sitting in a room crying and reading letters about how I’m wasting my potential.

 

But, I am powerless…I want my old life back…I just hid in the bathroom, called Verizon, and asked if I can get that BlackBerry back.

Wax/Stamps/King George


My fifth grader was blah-blah-blah-ing about King George, the Stamp Act, Loyalists and Patriots. While I am very invested in my kids’ education, quite frankly I successfully completed elementary school a long time ago.  So, if I’m honest, sometimes I’m a little bitter because I feel like I’m in the midst of a giant do-over.

 

As Finn was blah-blah-blah-ing about his idea for his Stamp Act poster, I was wondering if faking a seizure would buy me some time to check Facebook.

 

But then BOOM — he started talking about how he wanted to melt red wax and make some sort of stamp. FLASHBACK — me about his age sitting in my pink bedroom melting a bunch of different colored wax sticks on the back of envelopes and stamping them with these ultra groovy metal stampers. Remember that? Gawd, I loved, loved, loved hunting for just the right stamper and melting the wax in just the right spot to perfectly seal the envelope. And, now I had a chance to do it all over again with my son.

 

Off to the craft store we went. Alas, tucked away in the wedding section (what?) we found our supplies — red wax sticks and a stamper with a curly “G” for King George of course.  It was ridiculous how psyched I was!

 

That night we made way too many of those “G”s because it was so.much.fun…I was in girl-heaven.
